What is Proof of Play (PoP)?

The Proof of Play feature within Signagelive enables a greater depth of analytics around asset playback and provides the process of recording the start and end time for when a media asset is played, which allows you to know whether your media has been played and how many times. Proof of Play is independent to the Report feature within Signagelive and both can be used concurrently.

Please Note:

Proof of Play is an additional application accessible from within Signagelive, if you wish to use the feature, you will need to request from the Signagelive Support or Sales Team who will arrange for Proof of Play to be added to your Application list.

How does Proof of Play work?

Proof of Play works by your Player sending the relevant data from your device as to when each selected media asset starts and stops. The Proof of Play API has been designed specifically for the handling of Proof of Play logs and providing the data to the user interface of your network.

How is Proof of Play set up?

Once Proof of Play has been added to your Network, you (as a User or an Administrator) will see it within the Applications menu when logged in to the Signagelive interface. Follow these steps to access Proof of Play:

  • Login to your Signagelive Network as a User or Administrator

  • Click on the Applications Menu (drop down list in the top right corner showing which application you are currently using, learn more about the Application Menu, here)

  • Select Proof of Play

What Proof of Play data will I be able to report?

Within the Proof of Play application, you will be able to view and export reports based on the following categories:

  • Players

  • Media Assets

  • Layouts

  • Layout zones

  • Playlists

  • Playlist Media Assets

  • Custom RSS Feeds

  • Customs RSS Feed items

  • Custom RSS Feed Item Media Assets

Which items will report its Proof of Play data?

When Proof of Play is added to your Network, no Player or media will report its Proof of Play data until you enable it.

You can select any of the items above to report its Proof of Play data within the Signagelive application, but media will only ever report when it is played on a Player that has Proof of Play enabled on it.

Important Note: You must enable Proof of Play on at least one Player in order to see any reporting within the Proof of Play application. If you have enabled Proof of Play on one or more pieces of media, you will not see any report until it is enabled against at least one Player.

If a Player is set to be included in Proof of Play, then when items are scheduled to that Player, if those items are set to be included in Proof of Play, the Player will log the requested data.

Whether the items are included is calculated using a hierarchy of the scheduled items.

  • Playlist Media Asset

  • Playlist

  • Media Window

  • Layout

  • Media Asset

What data is sent to and from a Player?

To keep data transfer between Players and Signagelive low only the minimum of data is sent to and from the Players.

Players upload their Proof of Play Logs at set intervals, this is defined against the Network. It will be set by default to be every 24 hours.

There is also a maximum file size and minimum disk space setting for each Player Type, if either of these are reached, then the Proof of Play Log is uploaded straight away. These are checked every time an impression is logged.

As an example of file size, if a Player is logging impressions every 10 seconds for 24 hours, the CSV file size is roughly 800KB’s.

What is an Impression?

An ‘Impression’ is every time a particular Asset, Playlist, or Layout plays on a Player. Proof of Play will report each Impression any of those things make across all enabled Players. So, if you enable PoP on 3 Players, enabling PoP on 2 Playlists each with 2 pieces of content and those Playlists play twice a day, you would see 12 impressions made per day within your PoP report.

What is a Reference?

You can apply references to your media and to your Players when you enable PoP on any of those things, which when viewing the reports from the Proof of Play application, will allow you to view or breakdown your reports by these references. These can then be used to report on any particular advertising campaign or period you wish to show the PoP data for.

How do I enable Proof of Play on a Player?

In order to report when a piece of media (an Asset) is played, you will first need to have enabled Proof of Play on the Player that you wish to show this ‘Impression’ on. To do this, follow these steps:

  • Login to your Signagelive Network as a User or an Administrator

  • Select Network

  • Select Manage

  • Select the Player that you wish to enable Proof of Play against

  • Select the Proof of Play tab

  • Tick the ‘Proof of Play Enabled’ box

Can I enable Proof of Play on all my Players?

You can. You can select Proof of Play within the Global Network Settings, which will then enable the feature across all Players activated on your Signagelive Network.

To do this, follow these steps:

  • Login to your Signagelive Network as a User or an Administrator

  • Select Network

  • Select Manage (Old)

  • Select Global Network Settings

  • Select ‘Include All Players in Proof of Play’

  • Select Save

Congratulations! You have now enabled one, multiple or all Players to report Proof of Play data. The next step is to tell them which content to report this data against.

How do I enable Proof of Play on an Asset?

If you wish to report every time an asset plays, regardless of whether that is within a Playlist, a Layout or a Custom RSS feed, you should activate Proof of Play on the Media Asset itself. Follow the steps below to enable this:

  • Login to your Signagelive Network as a User or an Administrator

  • Select Content

  • Select Playlist

  • Select Create/ Edit

  • Select the Media Asset located within your Asset Library

    • Note: it should not be within a Playlist at this point, if you wish to enable Proof of Play for media within a Playlist, read the following stage.

  • Double click this Asset or open the Context Menu (3 dots located to the right of each Asset) and select Properties

  • Select the Proof of Play tab

  • Tick ‘Log each time this Asset plays’

This will now report each time this particular asset plays on any of the Players that you have enabled Proof of Play upon. Each time this Asset plays upon any of the enabled Players, it makes an ‘Impression’ and this is shown within the Proof of Play Application and reports.

How do I enable Proof of Play on a Playlist Media Asset?

By enabling Pop on any Playlist Media Asset (or PMA) it will then report each impression made by that single Asset each time the Playlist plays on any PoP enabled Player. You would not then need to also enable PoP on your Playlist or Layout etc if you wish to see just PoP reporting on this particular instance of the Asset playing.

To enable PoP on a Playlist Media Asset, follow these simple steps:

  • Login to your Signagelive Network as a User or an Administrator

  • Select Content

  • Select Playlist

  • Select Create/ Edit

  • Create a new or open an existing Playlist

  • Select a Playlist Media Asset (any individual Asset within your Playlist)

  • Open its properties by either double clicking the PMA or by clicking the 3 dot context menu and selecting Properties

  • Tick the ‘Log each time this asset plays’ box

  • Save your Playlist

This will enable Pop against the individual Asset within this Playlist. It will only report the impressions made by the Asset each time it plays within this particular Playlist on a PoP enabled Player. If you wish to report every instance an Asset is played generally, you should enable PoP on the Asset before being placed within a Playlist.

How do I enable Proof of Play on a Playlist?

You can also enable Proof of Play to repost the impressions made by the Assets within a Playlist. This will report each time a Playlist Media Asset (each piece of media within a Playlist) plays on any Player.

To enable Proof of Play against a Playlist, follow the steps below:

  • Login to your Signagelive Network as a User or an Administrator

  • Select Content

  • Select Playlist

  • Select Create/ Edit

  • Within the Playlist Creator, select ‘Open Playlist’

  • Select Save Playlist

  • Under Proof of Play, tick the ‘Log each time an Asset plays in this Playlist’

  • Select Save

As suggested, this will now report every Impression made within the Playlist. It will not report each time the Playlist itself plays, but each time every Asset within the Playlist plays on any Player with Proof of Play enabled.

How do I enable Proof of Play on my Layout?

If you wish to enable Proof of Play reporting for any content shown within your published Layouts, you should follow the steps below:

  • Login to your Signagelive Network as a User or an Administrator

  • Select Content

  • Select Layouts

  • Within the Layout Manager, right click on the Layout you wish to enable Proof of Play upon

  • Select Properties

  • Tick ‘Include in Proof of Play’ option listed in left menu panel

Proof of Play will now log each impression made by any content that plays as part of this Layout whilst published.

How do I enable Proof of Play in a zone within a Layout?

Not only can you enable PoP for an entire Layout, but you can also enable it to report the overall impressions made by any content within a certain ‘Zone’ of your Layout.

This could be a Static Zone, or a Schedulable Zone, whichever you choose, you should follow the steps below to enable PoP for one of your Layout zones:

  • Login to your Signagelive Network as a User or an Administrator

  • Select Content

  • Select Layouts

  • Select an existing Layout or create a new Layout including at least one Static or Schedulable zone

  • Click on the zone you wish to enable PoP within

  • Select Proof of Play Logging tab

  • Tick ‘Include in Proof of Play box

  • Save Layout
