Have you ever noticed the "Use NTP" setting in your Signagelive player configuration for LG webOS devices and wondered what it does? This seemingly small checkbox plays a crucial role in how your LG webOS display manages its date and time, and understanding its nuances can prevent potential scheduling or playback issues.

Let's dive into how this setting works and what the different configurations mean for your players.

Where to find the "Use NTP" Setting

The "Use NTP" setting is within the Signagelive settings (accessed via the blue button) on your LG webOS remote. By default, it is unticked.

How "Use NTP" Works

The "Use NTP" setting determines the source your LG webOS player uses to get its date and time information. There are primary scenarios:

Scenario

Date/Time Source

How it works:

Scenario 1:

"Use NTP" is Unticked (Default Behaviour)

When "Use NTP" is unticked (the default), your LG webOS player will obtain its date and time information directly from Signagelive.

Signagelive provides this information via a URL similar to: http://time.signagelive.com/api/localtime/?tzName=..... This ensures your player is always in sync with Signagelive's time, helping to prevent scheduling discrepancies.

Scenario 2: "Use NTP" is Ticked with "Default NTP Server"

If "Use NTP" is ticked in Signagelive AND the "Default NTP Server" option is also ticked within the LG webOS Date/Time settings, your player will use LG's pre-configured NTP (Network Time Protocol) servers.

webOS 4.0/4.1 Models: These models will primarily use us.pool.ntp.org.

webOS 6.0 Models: These models have a more robust fallback mechanism. They will first try to access us.pool.ntp.org and if there's no response or an error, they will try the following servers in order:

  • uk.pool.ntp.org

  • kr.pool.ntp.org

  • au.pool.ntp.org

Scenario 3: "Use NTP" is ticked, and the customer uses their own NTP Server.

If "Use NTP" is ticked in Signagelive AND the "Default NTP Server" option is NOT ticked within the LG webOS Date/Time settings, the customer has opted to use their own custom NTP server.

While this is allowed and offers flexibility for environments with specific network requirements, the customer must ensure their custom NTP server details are entered correctly, and tte server is accessible from the LG player.

Understanding the "Use NTP" setting helps ensure your LG webOS players always display the correct time, leading to seamless content playback and a reliable digital signage experience. If you have any more questions or have any issues, please don't hesitate to contact our Support Team.
