Update: (Windows XP SP2) - End of Life for Windows XP based media players

Follow

Dear Customer,

As per our previous email on the 2nd December 2014 in relation to Signagelive ending support for media players running Windows XP or derivative operating systems on the 31st December 2015, we are writing to you to give you some further news about players currently using Windows XP Service Pack 2.

What is the issue with Windows XP SP2?

We recently changed our SSL certificate to use the SHA-2 hashing algorithm as SHA-1 is now considered unsecure and will soon display as SSL security warnings within Google Chrome. As a result of this change we have discovered an issue with Windows XP Service Pack 2 in that SHA-2 is only supported in Windows XP Service Pack 3 and above, which means that media players cannot connect to our servers if they are running Windows XP Service Pack 2 or below.

How are we trying to help?

To give any affected customer the best chance of retaining connectivity, we have temporarily re-enabled Signagelive to accept connections from Windows XP Service Pack 2 players. Please note this is a temporary solution and you will need to upgrade your players to Service Pack 3 before 9am on the 2nd February 2015.

What will happen at 9am 2nd February 2015?

We will disable the temporary work around and any players not upgraded to Windows XP Service Pack 3 will stop connecting. You will still be able to upgrade to Service Pack 3 however your player will not connect until the update is applied.

How do I upgrade to Windows XP Service Pack 3?

Please contact your reseller, IT support team or partner who will be able to assist you.

What will happen between now and 31st December 2015?

Assuming that there are no critical security patches that we need to apply to the Signagelive cloud product your Windows XP Service Pack 3 clients will continue to connect to Signagelive and operate as normal. Updating to Service Pack 3 prior to the 2nd February 2015 will ensure your connectivity is continued.

If there is a security patch that we need to apply to the Signagelive Cloud that does stop your player connecting it will continue to play the last scheduled content and you will need to upgrade your media player as we will not be able to apply any patches to the client as they are not available from Microsoft.

What will happen after 31st December 2015?

Assuming that there are no critical security patches that we need to apply to the Signagelive cloud product your Windows XP Service Pack 3 clients will continue to connect to Signagelive and operate as normal.

If there is a security patch that we need to apply to the Signagelive Cloud that does stop your player connecting it will continue to play the last scheduled content and you will need to upgrade your media player as we will not be able to apply any patches to the client as they are not available from Microsoft.

Our Support Team will not be able to answer any queries for clients running Windows XP and will advise you to upgrade to a newer client.
